Why Use Serums?

In the texture-obsessed world of beauty and self-care, if it’s whipped, jelled, buttery, or emulsifying, it is probably going to pique our curiosity. How a product feels is often as important as how it works (even if you aren’t a fan of oddly satisfying IG videos) and to some, new textures might suggest new results. Although novelty doesn’t equal quality, the right form really can improve the function of a product. Serums, for example, are the gold standard when it comes to delivering the most active ingredients in the most efficient way. Let’s take a closer look.

Serum or moisturizer? Or both? And in what order? What’s the difference between a serum and a moisturizer? Lots of questions. We have lots of answers.

What is a serum?

A serum is typically a highly concentrated formula that contains peptides, antioxidants, and anti-aging properties. In their simplest form, serums are all the good ingredients minus the thickeners or fillers that traditionally exist in creams and moisturizers. You could probably consider serums as the most efficient form of skincare. Moisturizers can be an amazing defense mechanism, as they create a barrier between your skin and the world’s pollutants. However, sometimes the active ingredients are blocked too.

Do I really need a serum?

Technically, no. But could you benefit from a serum? Most likely. If you have a skin issue that you are trying to address with one or more active ingredients (e.g. hydroquinone for discoloration, glycolic acid for ruddiness or fine lines, hyaluronate for hydration, or NAD+ for aging skin), a serum can pack a powerful punch. These actives can be delivered in other forms, but may take longer to produce results.

How do I use a serum?

The frequency and time of day (morning, night, or both) that a serum should be applied depends entirely on the active ingredients it is charged with delivering to your skin. It is important to put your serum on immediately after cleansing, but before applying moisturizer or sunscreen. This allows all of the potent ingredients to penetrate the dermis and absorb completely rather than being blocked by the larger molecules of any more viscous products you might apply afterwards.

Does a serum replace my moisturizer?

Serums and moisturizers both provide skin with essential hydration, but they do so in different ways. Serums deliver ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, one of the most effective moisture magnets found in high-quality skincare, deeper into the skin. Lotions and creams, on the other hand, provide a protective barrier to lock in essential moisturizer. If your skin is particularly dry or dehydrated, layering a moisturizer on top of a serum can provide optimal benefits. If your skin tends to produce plenty of its own moisture, you might do well using just a serum.
