Skincare Tips for Maturing Skin According to Dermatologists

Your Skincare Routine Update

So much of the self-care (and skin care) industry is focused on the younger generations. It can be hard to find real, actionable information about how to manage maturing skin. The skincare routine of someone who is 24 to 40 can vary greatly from the routine of someone aged 40 and beyond.

As we age, our skincare needs tend to change. Collagen production may decrease, skin can become drier or more oily, and sometimes your skin even becomes more manageable. However, key markers like early wrinkles, sunspots, and loss of volume are indications that it may be time for a more elevated skincare routine.

What’s Affecting Your Skin Now

Maybe we ignored our parents when they told us to wear sunscreen or ignored the signs of dehydration, nonetheless, our skin deserves much better. There is so much that can affect your skin, especially as our bodies change and age. Dermatologists and skin care specialists alike agree that there are specific factors that play a role in your skin health.

  • Sun Exposure and UV Rays. Too much exposure to the sun’s UV rays can lead to damaged skin cells - making your skin appear less elastic, thin and tissue-like, or thick and leathery. Skin cells are capable of repairing typical damage from sun exposure, but as we age, the cells are not able to repair as quickly or as often. Protecting the skin from harmful UV rays is the basis for any health and restorative skincare routine. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), it’s best to wear water-resistant sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher every day before going outdoors.
  • Lower Collagen Production. Collagen is a crucial protein that plays a major role in how youthful, bouncy, and full your skin looks. In fact, collagen makes up 70% of your skin’s protein. As we age collagen levels naturally begin to decline at age 20. This decline can be severely worsened by excessive sun exposure,  an inflammatory diet, smoking, and other lifestyle factors. Wrinkles, lines, loose skin, joint stiffness, and loss of elasticity are all signs of collagen depletion. While declining collagen levels are completely normal, research also shows that not replacing collagen is also critical.  Replacing collagen can be done by taking supplements or eating amino acids and antioxidants like Vitamin C.
  • Lower NAD+ Production. NAD+ is a little-known compound that plays a central role in many of your body’s cellular processes including DNA repair and protection from UV rays. Targeting and replenishing NAD+ levels directly can effectively improve skin cells’ ability to repair damage and reduce signs of aging.

Key Ingredients for Mature Skin over 50

As our bodies mature, it can be difficult to know exactly what it needs to feel our best. Our skin is no different. So many key principles about living a healthy lifestyle also apply to having healthy, bright skin. Managing dryness, wrinkles, and sensitivity in the skin can be tough to navigate but ultimately you’ll want to make sure your skincare has ingredients that specifically target these issues.

    • Hyaluronic Acid

One of the main symptoms of aging skin is dryness, and hyaluronic acid is the holy grail for retaining moisture, relieving dryness, and achieving ultimate hydration. If you’re familiar with skincare at all then you’ve likely heard of this element. Hyaluronic acid is actually already found in our bodies, and predominantly in our skin. But like most things, as we age and expose our skin to damage, the levels can decrease.

Hyaluronic acid can be found in facial cleansers, serums, and moisturizers. We recommend getting a serum AND a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid for the best results. Some skincare brands like NADIA, make it a priority to include hyaluronic acid in their formulas. All NADIA products contain sodium hyaluronate - a type of hyaluronic acid that absorbs into the skin faster than other types of acid.

    • NAD+

NAD+ is the latest trending skincare ingredient that celebrities everywhere can’t get enough of. The likes of Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner are now letting us in on their anti-aging secret: NAD+. While this compound has always lived within our bodies, it is not often mentioned within the skincare industry. NADIA offers the only NAD+ skincare products on the market. Each product contains at least 100mg of NAD+ to target and reduce signs of aging, like wrinkles, sun damage, and fine lines.

NADIA’s Corrective Eye Cream & Lip Renewal Cream applicators both use cooling roller balls for a targeted application. Use these two products if your main concerns are fine lines around the eyes and lips. For an all-over approach, try the Power Serum, highly concentrated formula with 300 mg of NAD+.

    • Retinol

Some people are familiar with retinol and understand that it’s a good ingredient to add to your routine. But what does retinol actually do? Retinol is made from Vitamin A and has been shown to benefit your skin in several ways. Retinol goes into the deep layers of the skin to boost the production of collagen and elastin, giving your skin a more plump appearance. Once beneath the epidermis, retinol also acts as an exfoliant and unclogs pores.

Learning how to look and feel our best can be difficult at any age. It can be especially difficult when most of the information available is not geared towards you. This guide provides a good starting point for anyone looking to take better care of their skin. Incorporate these ingredients and NADIA products into your routine and you’ll surely notice the difference.
